This famous laguna south of València is an important wetland, and birds of passage love to feed in its surrounding rice fields. People like to eat here, too: the village of El Palmar, more or less surrounded by L’Albufera, has been transformed from a collection of reed-thatched fishermen’s huts into an agglomeration of restaurants, each trying to outdo the others with the magnificence of its paella valenciana. You come here, therefore, to watch birds through binoculars and then, when the sun has set, to study menus with equal intensity. It is sometimes very difficult to move after one of these gargantuan feasts of rice, game birds and seafood. Fortunately for the comatose (although not for resident birds), there is a surfeit of nearby beach hotels along the strip of land between the laguna and the sea; in any of these you can sleep off the effects of a too-rich paella and be none the worse for it the next day.

El Parque Natural de la Albufera de Valencia esta situado a escasos kilómetros de la ciudad de Valencia. El lago limita al norte, al sur y al oeste con arrozales, mientras que al este limita con la devesa de la Albufera.El Parque Natural de la Albufera fue declarado como tal en 1986, tiene una superficie aproximada de 21000 hectáreas y se sitúa en la región suroriental de la plana de Valencia.La Albufera tiene una gran importancia ecológica ya que forma parte de la lista de áreas húmedas de importancia internacional y, además de ello, es considerada Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA).Destaca la presencia del artet y el samaruc, que son endemismos mediterráneos, relegados a los “ullals” y a las acequias que aun conservan una calidad de aguas aceptable.


El llac de l'Albufera ocupa 2837 ha, de les quals 350 corresponen a les mates, acumulacions de vegetació palustre que floten a l'interior del llac i a prop de les vores. El llac en sí es formà fa més de 5000 anys degut al tancament d'un golf antic per un cordó litoral, que s'esten des de València fins a Cullera. Aquesta barra es formà amb les aportacions de sediments fluvials dels rius Túria i Xúquer i distribuits pel corrent marí. L'Albufera es comunica amb la mar per mitjà de dues goles naturals (la del Perelló i la del Perellonet) i una artificial (la del Pujol, afegida el 1953). La forma actual de l'Albufera és més o menys semicircular, però els mapes del segle XVIII la figuraven més estesa i allargada. En quant a profunditat, separant-se de la vorera de 300 a 400 m, es troben -0,25 m; i al centre hi ha clots de fins a -2 m. L'alimentació d'aigua prové actualment dels canals de reg i d'alguns insignificants barrancs, però amb una conca col·lectora de 700 km2 .
La vegetació és pròpia en cada ambient del parc: dunes, marges del lac, llacunes temporànies i pinedes a la Devesa. La fauna presenta alguns endemismes notables com el samaruc i el fartet. Aquestos dos peixos van veure reduïda la seua població dràsticament degut a la introducció de nous depredadors als que no estaven acostumats i a la contaminació de sèquies, ja que només poden viure a aigües clares. El parc té una gran importància ornitològica pel fet que s´hi reuneixen 260 espècies d'aus, de les qual, més de 80 hi nidifiquen.


La plaza de la Virgen





The Plaza de la Virgen stretches out in front of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados and the "Apostles' Door" of the Cathedral. It's filled with people shopping, out for a stroll, or on their way to or from work, as well as pigeons fluttering about and unaware of their condition as eternal witnesses to the passage of time.

This is a simple plaza without too much decoration. There is a fountain (though not even located in the center!). The fountain is like a bronze "Falla" that honors the creativity of the Valencian character. It represents the Turia river in human form surrounded by its tributaries. This allegory made into a fountain is a monument to water and has been the subject of thousands of pictures.

From the Plaza de la Virgen you can easily reach Caballeros street which runs through the old aristocratic neighborhood, site of palaces and ancestral homes that house mostly government offices today.


La ciudad de las artes y las ciencias





The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences) was recently built adjacent to the upstream end of the Jardines del Turía. It is a campus which provides a dramatic increase in the city's cultural infrastructure, with a planetarium and various museums. The location of the campus directly adjacent to the historical center provides the campus with a central location, while the complementarity of its architecture and its layout create a cohesive district. The modern and innovative character of the architecture makes it clearly distinct from the rest of the city, while creating a new style which is clearly Valencian, thanks to the designs by the native Calatrava. The connection between the older city and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is strengthened by the new bridge which links them together, also built by Calatrava.

La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias cuenta con una superficie de 350.000 m2, siendo el complejo más grande de Europa de sus características.
En el antiguo cauce del Rio Turia se encuentra el complejo Cientifico Cultural de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (CAC). Este complejo ha sido proyectado por los arquitectos Santiago Calatrava y Félix Candela, dos de los más importantes representantes de la arquitectura "naturista".
